Spain’s Alberto Contador to miss the Giro d’ Italia 2012 but keen to appear in Tour de France 2012
Spanish cyclist, Alberto Contador, declared that he will be participating at the Tour de France 2012. His interest towards riding the French grand tour indicates that the cyclist will miss on the Italian grand tour in the coming season.
The Spaniard participated at the Giro d’ Italia presentation held earlier this month as the route and dates were unveiled.
The 28-year-old won the French grand tour on three occasions in 2007, 2009 and 2010 as he finished 5th overall this year.
He commented about the plans for the 2012 season as he mentioned that Tour de France 2012 will be his biggest goal.
Despite attending the Giro d’ Italia ceremony, the cyclist might miss the event as he is focusing on the Tour de France 20112.
He said, "The course is good for me, and if I went with my heart, then I'd certainly race it.” He further added that, "Next year, I will think about other different objectives, such as the Tour de France. Although you can never say never again, next year
I will not be here".
Contador also holds the honour of winning the Giro d’ Italia twice, in 2008 and the most recent in 2011.
Alberto showed interest in riding at the Tirreno-Adriatico, a track that is like an unfamiliar territory for the young rider.
He stated, "The race and the Italian fans have supported me in my two Giros. Next year I'll come back to Italy to race the Tirreno-Adriatico, a race that I don't have in my track record."
Denmark will be hosting the first three stages of the Giro d’ Italia 2011. The opening individual time trial stage 1, the 206 kilometre stage 2 and 190 kilometre stage 3 will all take place in Denmark before the race moves on to its familiar surroundings
in Italy.
The former champion is still waiting on the hearings from Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that was postponed till November 2011.
He was tested positive during the Tour de France 2010 and the decision on his case has still not been announced.
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and CAS are looking to ban the cyclist for 2 years as he was tested positive for clenbuterol.
