Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo wins Dutch Moto GP 2010
Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo continues his domination in the 2010 Moto GP season with another win at the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen. Lorenzo, who was riding his Yamaha defeated runners-up Dani Pedrosa and Australia’s Casey Stoner who finished at third place.
Randy de Puniet, who had done well in the qualifying rounds, finished at a disappointing sixth place. Lorenzo, who also won at Silverstone last weekend, won his third race of the season to take his championship lead to 47 points, ahead of countryman Dani Pedrosa.
Apart from that, there was hardly any challenge from the rest of the riders. Casey Stoner, who has not been able to finish in the top 3 this season also applied good pressure for sometime but could not match to Lorenzo’s flawless display. The top 3 in the end were only separated by just one-third of a second.
Despite the challenge, Lorenzo was not bothered about who was behind him as he continued to improve his time with every lap. He slowly and gradually made enough daylight between him and the chasing pack to win the race with ease.
Andrea Dovizioso was the only worthwhile challenge for Lorenzo but the Honda rider could not bring his ‘A’ game to the Dutch Grand Prix. With only 11 laps remaining, Andrea was more than 5 seconds adrift. The result did little to reduce the gap of 37 points between him and Lorenzo.
Things got worse for Dovizioso as American rookie Benn Spies once again showed immense control and speed by overtaking the Honda rider with 10 laps to go. As a result, Spies finished at fourth place in the end.
After the race, a jubilant Lorenzo said that the race was a bit more difficult than Silverstone but he knew if he did not make any errors of his own, there was no chance for the chasing pack to catch up to him.
The championship leader added that he was surprised by the lap times posted by Casey and Dani and he really had to fight it out to maintain his lead and win the race.
Dani Pedrosa, who could not match the pace of Lorenzo, was still content with a second place finish. The rider added that he was pleasantly surprised with the final result, because his practice sessions did not go according to plan.
He added that he would like to thank the team as they worked really hard for him and hoped that the next race in Catalan would be much better.
Marco Melandri from Italy was unfortunate to crash and dislocate his shoulder in Friday’s practice session which was why he did not feature in the race.
Lorenzo has dearly benefitted from the injury to teammate Rossi. Since the beginning, Lorenzo was living under the shadows of the Italian maestro, and credit goes to the Spaniard for taking this opportunity with both hands when his team needed him the most. The season is still young with 12 more races to go, but the form Lorenzo has shown is truly inspiring.
The next race will take place in Lorenzo’s home circuit in Barcelona. This will be another motivating factor for him to do well. Earlier in the Moto2 Circuit it, was Italy's Andrea Iannone who dominated the race to secure his second win of the season. Spaniard Toni Elias finished at second spot while fellow countryman Marc Marquez came on top in the 125 CC Grand Prix.
