Spain’s Paramount Park Murcia snatches lead at 2011 Audi TP52 World Championships: Day 2
After finishing third at the end of first day at the 2011 Audi TP52 World Championships in Sardinia’s Porto Cervo, Spanish TP52 yacht, Paramount Park Murcia made a strong comeback on Day 2 and snatched the overall podium standings lead from British Gladiator.
The Spanish squad are now on top with seven points. There could be only one race in the event today due to no winds in the morning of second day.
The championship is being hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on the Costa Smeralda. The second day of the event was not supportive at all, as there were no winds on the famous Porto Cervo waters and participants had to wait for winds until the afternoon
to sail their boats. Due to these circumstances, only one windward-leeward race commenced.
Paramount Park Murcia did a marvellous job winning the only race of the day to hit first spot and nudge Great Britain’s Gladiator down at number three position. However, though the Gladiator team finished fourth in the race and tumbled down on second place,
they were able to maintain their lead over America’s Quantum Racing with a one-point difference.
Weather conditions are expected to be higher on Day 3 with some beefy Mistral like Cagliari which blows usually in July.
Project manager Paramount Park Murcia, Ignacio Triay, explained, “What is interesting now I think for the fleet is that you now have to look back to, I think Cagliari, in July for the last time we really sailed in strong breeze and so that will be a challenge
for everyone to get back into that mode smoothly. For us it will be a case of spending some time looking at the different modes and settings which worked for us earlier in the season. It will be interesting, for sure.”
The overall podium standings at the end of Day 2 are given below:
1. Paramount Park Murcia (ESP) 4, 2, 1 = 7 points
2. Gladiator (GBR) 3, 1, 4 = 8 points
3. Quantum Racing (USA) 1, 3, 5 = 9 points
4. Container (GER) 2, 7, 3 = 12 points
5. RÁN (SWE) 6, 5, 2 = 13 points
6. Audi Azzurra Sailing Team (IT) 5, 4, 7 = 16 points
7. Audi ALL4ONE (GER) 7, 6, 6 = 19 points
