Question:

Spandex or Not?

Okay, this year I'm starting junior high and I'm doing volleyball in athletics. I'm really nervous about wearing spandex shorts because I'm over weight and I'm afraid everyone will laugh at me. Don't get me wrong, I'm usually not the one to care about what people think, but I don't like being talked about behind my back.

  1. Spandex accually make you look skinner. Your thighs look so much smaller. Trust me you'll be fine, but if your unconfortable tlak to your counsalar ( sorry i cant spell) or your coach and they can proably do somthing about it!(=

  2. well i had the same problem in 7th and 8th grade volleyball. im very slightly overweight. i just got the same color in regualr shorts and wore them over top of the spandex. if u can find out if u are able to do that then thats the best way to go. but if u cant dont worry about it. it doesnt matter how much u weigh mostly EVERYONE hates spadex. and if people do talk about your back they arent comfortable in spandex either so they need to talk about someone else to get their mind off of it.

dont worry about anything. i loved jr  high volleyball. it was one of the best times in my life so far. good luck

  3. i know exactly what you mean...don't worry about it to much...because if people talk about you behind your back, they obviously don't feel very comfortable within their own bodies either!

  4. i play vball 2 and spandex is awesome. they actually make u look skinner! who cares what other people think. Just get out there and play ur *** off!

  5. You have some options. First off the decision is mainly up to you, but I will give you some helpers. I play volleyball and i have never worn spandex and I am pretty fine with that. Wearing or not wearing spandex isn't going to effect your play, (no matter what size you are!) It is more for looks and comfort! Comfort comes into play big time. Most players who wear spandex have to adjust them constantly. That wouldn't be fun! But now I have some tips for you. If you feel like you wouldn't look good in spandex, there are different types of spandex that fit different body types. You could buy a pair that are longer, that way it could cover up your legs more. People who want to show off their legs buy the kind that are shorter and tighter. So there you have it! You can make spandex work by using longer kinds, or you could ditch spandex and still play like a pro!!! =)

  6. Well, if you make the team you can wear other shorts over the spandex until you go onto the court. That is what I did last year.

                                                    Good Luck

  7. It may not be the best thing but it really shouldn't matter. if you love the sport, you shouldn't care about how you look in the uniform.

  8. I am really not sure what you could do. At my school we were not allowed to wear spandex at all. If you are very uncomfortable with it, I would talk to your coach or whoever is in charge and ask if you could wear shorts over your spandex. That seems reasonable to me.

And when it comes to what people say about you, ignore it. People will talk about all sorts of things and no matter what you do, they will still find something negative to say. This happens no matter what- if your overweight, short, etc. God made you the way you are and you should be happy that way. People only make fun because they are insecure about themselves or they are just unhappy people.

  9. They might not enforce uniform rules in junior high competition, but in high school, everyone on the court must have matching uniforms.  Almost without exception in our area, high school teams wear spandex shorts.

We have had overweight girls play, and I have never heard of any negative remarks.  When everyone on the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity teams for both high schools is wearing the same thing, it just doesn't stand out.

  10. In my opinion spandex should have never been invented not for wearing in public anyways. I would say who cares what people think but we all care what others think and what they say about us to an extent and as a teen you care even more. I guess this must be part of the uniform or you wouldn't be asking. Only about 2% of women look good in spandex that would be The 2% that have a perfect body. And as far as guys they just shouldn't wear them at all no matter what kind of body they have.  But if you feel uncomfortable in them get a longer shirt so your belly wont show. And then go out on the floor and kick some valley ball butt.

  11. Here is my advice:

I've played volleyball for 15 years and I have seen all sorts of shapes and sizes, I played varsity volleyball in high school and I play now in college.

Spandex can be very intimidating, yes, but that's beside the point.

You need to ask yourself if it really matters, be confident enough in your playing skills that people won't be looking at your body, but they will be looking at how you play and your skill

A good way to start is to wear spandex under normal shorts when you have practice, this will get you use to them

Also go to your local sport store or check online for spandex... there are so many different types out there that you could definately find one that suits you and your body

Also, lighten up on yourself. Don't worry about it because if you worry about what you look like in them it will make you tense and you won't play as well. Just be proud that you are staying in school and playing a sport and getting exercise. There are so many kids your age that just sit on the couch all day!!

No one will laugh and if they do, it should only make you want to get better and stronger to show them up.

Also if the girls do talk behind your back, approach them. Get face to face with them and address the problem because if you don't they won't stop.

And finally, RELAX!! Volleyball is supposed to be fun. If you find yourself focused on everyone else try to turn that focus onto your game. Work hard and do every drill with 110%. Volleyball is a great workout and if you stick with it and work hard you will for sure see improvement in your body and muscles.

    I hope I helped!!

    Good luck and play hard!!
