Spaniard Carlos Moya bids farewell to the World of Professional Tennis
Spain's Carlos Moya held a press conference in Madrid, where the professional communicated his retirement from the sport due to a persistent foot injury. Formerly ranked no. 1 in the World, Moya has not played since May 2010 after being injured in Madrid.
Carlos stated, "I wanted to play the big tournaments and say goodbye but I got to the Madrid tournament and I still wasn't 100%. I realized with that match that the moment had arrived. It's not how I dreamed of ending my career."
Additionally, Moya also became a father three months ago, and at the age of thirty four he is ready to leave the world of professional tennis. Carlos has only competed in seven matches as far as the 2010 tennis season is concerned. Moya finished with a 2-5
record. Furthermore, being missing in action due to injuries caused Carlos' World ranking to drop to no. 519.
Despite of the fact that Carlos plays with his right hand, the professional is naturally left handed. He is also one of the four players to have won over 500 matches at the Association of Tennis Professionals level. Apart from leading the Spanish team to victory
in the year 2004 at the Davis Cup, Moya bagged the 1998 French Open Men's singles title. In 1997, Carlos made it through to the Australian Open final but lost to America's Pete Sampras.
Moya lost 2-6, 3-6 and 3-6 in straight sets to Sampras in the championship final. On the contrary, a year down the line, Carlos annihilated compatriot Alex Corretja, thrashing him 6-3 in the first set, 7-5 in the second and 6-3 in the deciding third set to
clinch the French Open title.
Furthermore, Carlos last played on the ATP Tour at the Madrid Masters in May. The professional lost to Germany's Benjamin Becker in the first round. Moya ended his career with an ATP World Tour and a grand slam record of 575 wins as opposed to 319 defeats.
In addition, Moya exclaimed, "I'll keep on with my gym in Mallorca. I have a sports business and I'll dedicate more time to my wife, my daughter and my family. But I'll definitely miss tennis. Thanks to everyone for all these years. We'll see each other soon,
I don't know where but I hope it's soon."
