Spaniard Fernandez-Castaño savouring the Masters debut this week
The season is warming up for the first major event of the year, The Masters at Augusta National, and there will be a handful of debutants this year, who will be savouring a chance to be part of the high profile field.
One such debutant is the Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño who will be tee-ing off at the revered Augusta National.
Fernandez-Castaño was not able to make it to the coveted event last year due to a burgeoning back injury and had to sit back and watch the event on TV.
Meanwhile, his compatriot and country mate Alvaro Quiros shot a  blistering 65 in the opening round to share the lead with rampaging Rory McIlroy.
He said, “It took me a long time to qualify for this tournament and to get invited, so I just want to enjoy myself. It is a very special week and I’m looking forward to teeing off. I want to enjoy every minute of it”.
Fernandez-Castaño came back in the closing sessions of last year where he posted a strong runner-up finish in Castelló Masters and went over to bag his fifth European Tour title at Barclays Singapore Open.
The young Spaniard made it back in the top-50 on the Official World Golf Rankings and walked down the scenic Augusta National to try his hands on some practice shots alongside Quiros and his idol Jose Maria Olazabal on Monday.
He added, “I’ve played the last couple of days with Ollie and it is very special. Ollie is one of my heroes. There is so much information that you need to learn that sometimes you get overloaded. It is important to know what the course is about and where not to miss or go”.
At the same time, Fernandez-Castaño will now be hoping for a chance at the Ryder Cup later this year.
His performance at the Masters this week will surely be a decisive factor for the same.
Olazabal is the Captain for this year’s Ryder Cup team and will be giving his recommendations for the two places on the 12-member team.
The top-50 from the OWGR will be part of the field at this week’s Masters, including the likes of Rory McIlroy and the four-time Masters winner Tiger Woods.
