Spaniard Tommy Robredo withdraws from 2011 Sony Ericsson Open with injury
World no. 29 Tommy Robredo of Spain has withdrawn from the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open due to an adductor injury.
The Spaniard sustained the injury during his round of 16 match against World no. 21 Sam Querrey of USA at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last week. After thrashing the American 6-1 in the opening set of the fourth round match, the Spaniard sustained
the injury in the second set but went on to win it 6-3.
However, Robredo was forced to withdraw from his quarterfinal match against Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina as his injury aggravated.
Talking to the journalists, Robredo said, “After the match I knew that if something strange happens maybe I could play, but if not, for sure I will not play. We did an MRI yesterday night, and we saw the results. Obviously the doctor here says not to play.
The Spanish added, “We have been delaying it as much as possible because we were contacting our doctors in Spain to see what they feel about, and now the decision is done. Everyone is saying the same, so I am out of here and I am out of Miami, as well.”
This would have been Robredo’s tenth straight appearance of at the Sony Ericsson Open.
He has a 9-9 win/loss record at the Sony Ericsson Open. The Spanish did not go past the third round in the last two editions of the championship. He lost to Benjamin Becker of Germany in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-7(1) in the round of 32 last year. The 28-year-old
was upset by Taylor Dent of USA in straight sets 5-7, 3-6 in the third round in 2009.
Robredo’s best performance at the Sony Ericsson Open came in the 2007 edition of the championship as he upset, then World no. 26, Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(3) in the fourth round to reach the last eight. However, he lost to Guillermo
Canas of Argentina 6-7(5), 1-6 in the quarterfinal.
In his first appearance at the Miami Masters Series, the Spaniard lost to Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 4-6, 0-6 in the second round in 2002.
Robredo has won 16 out of 20 matches this season. The Spaniard has already won a title this year at the Movistar Open, where he defeated Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) in the final. The right handed started the season at the
Heineken Open, where he lost to Thomaz Bellucci in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 in the round of 16. He lost to the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 in the fourth round at the Australian Open.
The clay court season is right ahead so Robredo, a clay court specialist, needs to recover quickly from his injury to get back on the court and defend his ranking points in the coming clay court tournaments.
