Spaniard gets European Shot of the Month award
Sergio Garcia is the proud winner of the European Tour Shot of the Month award, for carding the first hole-in-one of his career, at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January.
This was his third tournament of the current season and he played tremendously well throughout the four-day stay in Abu Dhabi.
He finished the event in the top-15 and his performance was superb.
In the first round, Garcia carded a 186-yard iron shot ace on the twelfth hole and scored an eagle. This was the first eagle of the tournament and the award winning shot as well.
The officials also rewarded the Spaniard, three night’s stay at the Emirates Palace throughout his life, for hitting such an appealing stroke.
He finished the first round by recording 1-under par and tied for the 12th position.
He got 32% votes from his European fans and then the award successfully came in favour of the 32-year-old Spanish professional.
"Garcia has had a tough few years on the golfing circuit and to see him walk away with the perfect shot, especially during the first round reminds us why we play and love the game," Andrew Wild, the General Manager of Leaderboard's Sandford Springs course,
said.
Robert Rock’s 14th hole shot in the final round was also in the nominations. However, Garcia impressively defeated him with a 6% votes lead, as Rock received only 26% votes.
He carded a shot into a fairway bunker and then amazingly managed to reach near to the green by hitting a second shot.
He scored a ten feet birdie from the fairway and took a lead over his rivals. He finished 3-under par in the first round and continued the amazing performance on the fourth-day end.
His finals scores were 13-under 275 and he won the title by defeating the current world no.2 Rory McIlroy.
Graeme McDowell also recorded a hole-in-one in the final round’s twelfth hole. However spectators loved Garcia’s performance, leaving McDowell unable to achieve the award, by receiving only 17% votes.
The award winning player Garcia is happy to be honoured with the Shot of the Month award. He is more confident now and will also deliver his best at different courses to gain more respect.
