  1. Richard Harding Davis, a war correspondent and journalist.

Misconceptions were that Teddy charged up San Juan Hill, while it was actually Kettle Hill.  Another was that Roosevelt was commander of "The Rough Riders", which was actually the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.  The actual commander was Colonel Leonard Wood, a regular army officer, but nowhere near as good for newspaper sensationalism.  Teddy had been instrumental in helping recruit the men for the Regiment, who were cowboys from the west and college boys from the Ivy League Universities.

Probably the biggest misconception created was that the Rough Riders captured the hill all by themselves.  They were there, but they had a WHOLE LOT of help from the regular army troopers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry (Colored).  These were black cavalrymen, the famous "buffalo soldiers" from the Great Plains Indian wars.  All units got to the top of the hill at about the same time, but Teddy got all the newspaper credit, which got him to the White House within just a few years.
