Spanish Arch has solid claims under penalty in Barclays Handicap Hurdle at Ascot
Spanish Arch, who made his handicap debut on a winning note at Warwick nearly a couple of weeks ago, looks to have bright prospects despite a penalty in Barclays Handicap Hurdle at Royal Ascot on Friday, December 21st.
The 5-year-old faced two unlucky defeats early in the season. After finishing fourth at Uttoxeter in October, the Charlie Longsdon-trained could not add the winning touch, and claimed the same spot at Wetherby the following month.
Despite a couple of unfortunate defeats, the bay gelding looks pretty impressive on his first start under rules. The audience at Warwick saw him delivering a fantastic performance in the Betfred "When Both Teams Score" Handicap Hurdle.
Under Kielan Woods, the 4-1 chance failed to get off to a good start. But an excellent effort in the middle and final stages was enough for him to lead. After reaching the front row, he pumped up his speed significantly, and eventually scored by 10 lengths.
Having bagged such a convincing win, the son of Westerner is ready for more. Owned by James Hayman-Joyce & HJ Racing, the talented horse seems to have stronger claims than any other contestant.
He is not facing a weak opposition. A line-up of seven quality runners will be on the track to spoil his party. Over a distance of two miles and six furlongs, the competition will be for a handy prize of £6,256. The action will be begun at 15:05 GMT.
Duaiseoir also looks a big player despite a penalty. The 6-year-old earned a rise for his victory in blinkers at Taunton last week. After collecting plenty of embarrassment at Kempton, the Venetia Williams-trained raised his game considerably, and notched
up the top rank by seven lengths last time.
Another runner with fair chances is Farmer Matt. The lightly raced horse should be given respect despite a 12lb rise for his comprehensive triumph at Exeter last time.
It is going to be a three-way battle among Spanish Arch, Duaiseoir and Farmer Matt, with the vote going to the first-named. We wish the best of luck to all the horses.
