Question:

Spanish Citizenship Process: How long does it take?

My situation:

I'm Brazilian married to an Spanish national, but we live in Ireland at the moment. We're planning to move to Spain to reside there for one year so I can apply for the Spanish Citizenship and end the hassle of immigration paperwork that I have to go through all the time.

Questions:

1) After one year of proven residence I can apply for the citizenship. But how long does the process take (from the date I deliver the documents)?

2) Is there any place in Spain well known for speeding up the process? (I heard that in Galicia the Xunta tend to speed up if the family is from Galicia, where my wife is from)

3) Is there any problem if my wife keeps her job in Ireland? The flights are very cheap, so she would be able to work in Ireland and "reside" in Spain on weekends and holidays, but I'm worried if the spanish officials find it suspicious and delay the process.

I'd appreciate any answer for any of the questions..

Thanks very much!

  1. i heard from 3 to 5 years but you (maybe not both of us) must live and work there and show a lot of papers that proves you are living there. despite the lot of inmigrants here, is becoming hard to get  the citizenship that easy but the benefit you got is that you are already married with a spanish citizen and that would help. good luck

  2. Both you & your wife needs to live in Spain for that purpose, its not possible for any of you to live in one country & other in another.

Also it doesn't matter where in Spain you live to speed up process, its same no matter where in Spain you are. Local offices may have their own queues but general wait time is same all over the country.

    Good luck.
