Spanish Duke to defend the Investec City And Suburban Handicap at Epsom as the seasonal debut
Epsom will become home for the Class 2 Investec City And Suburban Handicap over a mile, two furlongs and 18 yards on Wednesday, 25th April. Competing for the 24.900 purse is the line-up of fifteen four-year and older thoroughbreds.
Quite a few contestants have already raced at Epsom but not all of them have won. Spanish Duke, Big Bad Bob’s five-year-old bay gelding out of mare, Spanish Lady, has won the previous season’s debut that was held at Epsom.
Spanish Duke won the Investec City And Suburban Stakes (Handicap) on 20th April over a mile and two furlongs, after taking charge of the final length of the race. He was riding with Eddie Ahern and had Resurge following him the closest and thus
qualifying as the runner up.
Ramona Chase settled third behind the winner while the two 9/2 joint favourites, Beachfire and Sand Skier, ended fifth and last.
This turned out to be the only victory of the 2011 season. The five-year-old’s final race of the season was at Epsom too. This time he was positioned sixth in the Try Totequickpick On All Totepool Bets Conditions Stakes on 29th August over a mile
and two furlongs.
The race was won by Vesuve while Measuring Time settled as the runner up. The 7/2 favourite of the race, Picture Editor, ended fourth on the line-up of eight.
This year around too his season will start off with racing at Epsom but if this race too will transform into a victory or not will come out in the open soon.
Another entry who has raced extensively at Epsom is Ramona Chase, High Chaparral’s seven-year-old bay gelding out of mare, Audacieuse.
From 3rd June 2011 to 14th July 2011, Ramona Chase raced five times at Epsom. He struck two second positions, two six positions and a fourth position.
His last race at Epsom was in the Toteswinger Handicap on 25th September at Epsom over a mile and two furlongs. The race was won by Con Artist as Romeo Montague settled as the runner up.
The 7/2 joint favourites, Roman Eagle and Colour Scheme, finished fifth and sixth on the track of eight.
He will race the second start of the season today after scoring third at Kempton on 31st March.
