Messi has now been incorporated into the Spanish organization after being an acclaimed member of the International Federation of Professional Footballers, an organization that represents footballers worldwide.
The three-time UEFA Champions League player completed the necessary documentation to become a part of AFE. The pint-sized attacker expressed his satisfaction at being ‘one more in the union’.
An AFE statement said: “The AFE is proud to have the two-time winner of the Balon de Oro, which embodies so many values of our sport and sets an example, especially for youngsters.”
Messi’s addition to the players union will be a big boost to the cause. The Argentina captain enjoys global media attention and this will go a long way in the plight of the players being heard by concerned authorities.
At the start of ongoing La Liga campaign, more than 200 hundred players didn’t receive their salaries, consequently, leading to a strike. La Liga was postponed by one match-day.
Players had to continue with their clubs without receiving compensation and by the end of 2010/11 La Liga campaign, over 50 million Euros were owed by the clubs in Spain’s top two tiers of domestic competition.
As a result, there has been a change in LFP’s charter and provisions have been made to ensure a repeat of these situations is not seen again. A provisional fund has been set-up by LFP to ensure players are paid up even if the club is threatened by financial
considerations.
President Luis Rubiales is in the process of having a bill approved which will give the agreements constitutional amenity and allow them to build on their success.
La Liga clubs are in deep financial crisis and the proactive approach of AFE is not looked upon in good light. However, these steps will help to make the league much stronger in the long run.
