Spanish La Liga: Real Madrid smash six past Deportivo la Coruna
The sleeping giants of Spanish Football, Real Madrid, finally woke up and roared all over the Bernabeu with a 6-1 demolition of Deportivo La Coruna.
There had been number of critics pointing out the problems at the heart of the Madrid frontline, as the all Whites had not been able to score enough goals in their first 7 games of the season.
It was world’s most expensive player Cristiano Ronaldo who netted in the first goal and also the last. The German summer signing Mesut Ozil got his first for the club as he scored the 2nd for the night,
Angel Di Maria netted in the 4th, Argentina Gonzalo Higuain got the 5th and an own goal from Ze Castro completing the scoring.
Deportivo’s only league goals in their last 6 games - that goes back to last season - came from two penalty kicks that Andres Guardado scored against Getafe. They did pull one back against Madrid in the 78th minute
though; Juan Rodriguez was the man who got one past Casillas but the match was all but over by then.
There was heavy rain and gusty wind in Madrid on the weekend, but the home faithful were full of spirit and full of noise. The mood at the Bernabeu was boosted by the news that title rivals Barcelona had been held to a 1-1
draw by Real Mallorca.
The home fans did not have to wait too long this time to jump in joy, as Ronaldo was in action just 4 minutes after the start. Mesut Ozil was the one who delivered a curling ball to the near post and Ronaldo was on spot to
head it in.
Madrid continued to dominate the match after the goal. It was the man who assisted in the first goal, Ozil, who got the 2nd. The German international found space in the box and at first looked to have taken a bit
too much time on the ball to set himself up, but did well to drive his left footed drive in the far corner past the diving goalkeeper.
Cristiano Ronaldo was in his element and with added confidence was beginning to look menacing. He had a dart at goal from just outside the box but the keeper did well to divert it away from the goal.
The home side though did not have to wait too long to get the 3rd; it was the former Liverpool midfielder Xavi Alonso who laid an excellent pass for Higuain on the left flank. Higuain did well to take it in his
stride and put in a threatening cross at the near post. His Argentine team mate di Maria was on spot and timed his run well to head in as the keeper hardly had a moment to blink.
The attacks from Madrid did not let up, and soon Ronaldo and later Sami Khedira had opportunities to make it 4 before the break.
As the half time whistle blew everyone at the stadium got on their feet and gave the home team a well deserved standing ovation. It was a welcome change considering they were jeered off when they played Osasuna last week.
The first half had barely seen Deportivo put on any sort of resistance, but soon after the resumption of 2nd half the away side had a great chance of pulling one back. Ricardo Carvalho could not keep
his balance and slipped on the wet turf, which left Nouioui Lassad straight on goal with Iker Casillas to beat. But the World Cup winning Spanish captain did well to make himself big and prevented Lassad from making it 3-1.
As Deportivo missed at one end, Madrid knocked in the 4th at the other. It was Higuain who clinically finished from close range. It was another slick move that involved the full back Sergio Ramos who
laid it off to Ronaldo and from his pass Di Maria returned the favour for the 3rd goal by crossing it in for Higuain.
Just as the clock hit 60 minutes, Madrid were 5 in front as Ze Castro somehow managed to side-foot the ball past his own goalkeeper.
Cristiano Ronaldo could have made it 6 soon after, when he had the goalkeeper beaten but only managed to hit the side netting.
There was finally some consolation for the away side, as Juan Rodriguez headed one past Casillas and made it 5-1. That still was not the end of the goals for the night. Madrid eventually put the cherry on top as Ronaldo burst
into the box on one of his typical runs and smashed it past a despairing Manu.
