Spanish La Liga weekly round-up – Getafe
Getafe are doing surprisingly well in the Spanish La Liga. They are currently positioned at number 7 and are just above Michael Laudrup’s Mallorca. Getafe finished 6th last season while being under Michel who is doing a good job training the players
from the youth academy of the club.
After finishing in the Spanish La Liga last season, Getafe managed to qualify for the Europa League this season. Their run in the European competition ended earlier than expected and that gave them the opportunity to concentrate on the Spanish La Liga.
In the Europa League, they were paired up with the German side Stuttgart along with Young Boys and Odense. Despite the fact that Getafe won two games and drew one, they lost three and ended third in their group. Stuttgart and Young Boys qualified for the
next round as Getafe were kicked off early on.
Getafe also competed in the Copa Del Rey and they were expected to do wonders especially when they were drawn against easier teams compared to their direct opponents like Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Mallorca. Getafe first faced the third division side Portugalete
and after drawing the game 1-1 away from home, they qualified for the pre-quarter final stages of the competition. The second division side Real Betis were to play Getafe in the knock out stages and despite the fact that Getafe were favourites to win it and
they won the game 2-1 at home, Real Betis proved to be tough at their home and won 3-1 as Getafe were knocked out of the Cup again after Real Betis went through on 4-3 goal aggregate.
Last week Getafe had the chance to top Atletico Madrid but they couldn’t, even though they had to face a bottom-of-the-table side Osasuna. Osasuna were to entertain them at their home ground and they simply proved to be a tough side to score against as they
deployed heavy defensive strategies. The Madrid side, Getafe tried their best to find the back of the net but it was definitely not their day and the woodwork denied them thrice. The game ended in a goal-less draw and Getafe’s chance to take the 6th
position in the Spanish La Liga was blown away by the bottom of the table side.
This week Getafe are going to face another easy task at home http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AS-Real-c38478 Sociedad are going to visit them. It is definitely their best chance to put pressure on Atletico Madrid who are on the same number of points in the Spanish La Liga table as Getafe.
