Spanish Men beat Russians 5-0 in EuroHockey Nations Championship in Monchengladbach, Germany
A wonderful hat-trick by Pau Quemada led the Spanish Men to a thrilling victory as they defeated their Russian counterparts 5-0 in their first Pool A match of the GANT EuroHockey Nations Championship (men), played at the Warsteiner Hockey Park in Monchengladbach,
Germany on Saturday, August 20.
The Spanish Men dominated the match from the starting whistle till the end by showing their class in both the halves as they made a double blow in the first half while they scored three goals in the second part of the game whereas the Russians ended their
day without finding a way to the Spanish net.
The first half started with some beautiful moves from the Spanish Men as they made a number of penetrations in the Russian circle but their real chance came in the 14th minute when they were awarded a penalty corner and Pau Quemada made no mistake
in converting that drag flick into their opening goal of the match. The Spanish Men took another 13 minutes to double their lead and once again Pau Quemada scored the second goal on a penalty corner that lasted till the interval. The first half ended at 2-0
to Spain.
In the second half the Spanish Men pressurised the Russian defence from the early moments and scored their third goal in the 41st minute, once again there was Pau Quemada who completed his hat-trick with a wonderful low drag flick. Just four minutes
after Quemada’s hat-trick the Spanish Men were once again in action in the 45th minute but this time it was the turn of Roc Oliva who made a splendid individual effort and scored a wonderful field goal. The fifth and the final goal of the match
was scored by Manel Terraza in the 57th minute, a beautiful field goal that lasted till the end. The match concluded at 5-0 to Spain.
Although the Spanish coach looked much happy with the team’s performance yet he was not convinced with his team’s performance and viewed that the result could had been better.
"The game was comfortable, perhaps too comfortable and we have lacked on occasions to better define the area, because the result could have been three or four broad goals," Dani Martin, the coach of the Spanish Men’s hockey squad, stated after the match.
"In any case, adding is important because this group cannot be forgiven no point because it is very tight. Pol Amat with discomfort was low as a precaution,” Martin further added to his comments after the match.
The Spanish team completely dominated the Russians throughout the game, as they managed to keep them scoreless in the game.
