Spanish Munoz, Miyazato share the second-round lead at Hawaii
Azahara Munoz and Ai Miyazato posted 64 and 65, respectively, in the second round of the LPGA Lotte Championship, sharing the lead.
Spanish Munoz, who shot a 72 in the first round, bounced back on the second day and displayed a superb game.
Munoz has not won any tournaments on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, however, analysts said that she is expecting better results at the $1.7 million event being played at Ko Olina Golf Club, Hawaii.
On the other hand, Ai Miyazato of Japan also picked pace in the second round, as she registered a 8-under 65, atoning for her first-round lapses.
Munoz kicked off the second round with a new vigour, as she recorded 7 birdies and one eagle to stay atop the leaderboard. She reeled off a birdie on the par-5 1st hole, but faltered on the second, as she scored a bogey.
With strong winds whipping through the course, Munoz cheered up the crowd by making superior putts. Although other players tried to give a tough time to the Spanish star, she appeared to be fully wary of her rivals and kept piling up scores.
Munoz triggered a flurry of excitement in the spectators when she shot an eagle on the par-4 6th hole.
Analysts said that despite the blustery weather, the 24-year-old avoided making rough shots, which helped her stay out of trouble on most of the holes.
On the other hand, Miyazato looked completely fired up, as she was stood firm after the first round. Scoring a 71 in the first round hampered the Japanese, but a decent 8-under 65 on the second day offset her previous day’s lapses.
Miyazato stunned the spectators by shooting seven birdies in the bogey-free round. She opened the day with a birdie on the first hole.
After parring 5 straight holes, she drained 2 birdies in a row on the par-4 7th and the difficult par-3 8th hole. On the back nine, the Japanese star posted 3 consecutive birdies.
The current world number one Yani Tseng stood tied for 12th at the end of the second round. She played well in the first round, recording a 69, but lost momentum in the next after posting a72 on the leaderboard.
