Spanish Open 2012: Anika Dorr makes her way to main round of Women’s Singles event
Women’s Singles shuttler Anika Dorr trod into main round of the Spanish Open after overpowering Alejandra Monteverde in final match of qualifying round on May 17, 2012.
The 45-minute encounter prolonged to three exhausting sets and both contenders put a commendable show of skills to read final figures 23-21, 20-22 and 21-10 on the board.
Anika and Alejandra, who belong to Germany and Peru respectively, snapped each other’s heels throughout the game and earned great deal of admiration for their fighting spirit.
First set of the match proved curtain raiser to their splendid performance in last two segments of the show.
Both ladies played fast badminton straight away in the beginning and set overall tone of game with some nerve-racking rallies.
They did not allow each other to gain a comfortable lead and stayed close in score position until one-minute break.
After the interval, Anika ruled the court for a short period of time but faltered in final stage which allowed the opposing shuttler Alejandra to catch her at game point situation.
They played three game points and finally Anika wrapped the set with a favourable margin of 23-21.
The following game was replay of first one but in reverse manner as the Peruvian campaigner levelled match score by winning second set.
Alejandra, who was also ranked six in qualifiers, was bit sluggish in start as she trailed behind her rival in first half of set but soon she came out of that phase by employing interesting tactics.
Many times she pushed her German rival on back-foot with power packed smashes and then deceived her with drop net shot.
Anika could not read her game and squandered a great opportunity of straight-set victory by losing the set with close total of 20-22.
However, decider turned one-sided affair unexpectedly when the lower ranked campaigner Anika Dorr stole the limelight in venerable fashion.
She dominated from very first shot to the last and pushed her challenger into dark by registering a staggering figure of 21-10.
Now Anika will test her skills against Tatjana Bibik in opening match of the main round in Spanish Open 2012.
