Spanish Pro Rider Xavier Tondo Volpini passes away: Cycling News
Spanish pro rider Xavier Tondo Volpini died on Monday morning May 23, after the garage door fell on him at his home in Granada. A news release from one of Spanish dailies stated that he was preparing to leave for the training ride with his team-mate,
Beñat Intxausti.
This news of Tondo's death was also confirmed by the Movistar Cycling Team's Manager, Eusebio Unzué Labiano. However, he was not able to give further details of his death, but he confirmed with assurance that Tondo is no longer in this world. No one,
as of yet, has confirmed the circumstances in which the accident took place.
The 32-year-old Tondo was an expert road racing cyclist. Tondo and Intxausti were scheduling to ride up to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the States of California and Nevada, between the California Central Valley and the Basin Range Province.
He gained immense success at a young age. In the beginning of this year he started working with Movistar Cycling Team. The year 2010 was a memorable one for his career, where he had an impressive campaign with Cervelo Test Team. On this platform he
secured a sixth position at the Vuelta Espana.
Tondo was also the winner of this year's Castilla y Leon tour. He was planning to participate in 2011 Tour De France, but unfortunately his life did not give him the chance to prove his worth.
Alberto Contador expressed his grieve by saying, "Life is so unjust and difficult to understand at certain moments, it’s impossible to describe my feelings on the death of Xavi Tondo. My most sincere condolences to his family. He was an incredible
person who loved this sport like nobody else. You will be missed. Rest in peace."
His followers and colleagues are extremely upset on his sad demise. The Giro d'Italia organisers have announced that they will observe a minute's silence before tomorrow's stage in Tondo's memory.
His news of sudden death is quite alarming for his followers. His death is a great loss in the world of cycling. He was a great man, who performed extremely well and managed to earn a number of titles and medals.
