Spanish Sahara - spanish or not?

Question

The Spanish Sahara - is it part of spain or not?

Is it claimed by two nations like the falklands or what?

Can someone give me info.

The Spanish Sahara as such no longer exists. The spanish pulled out of the Sahara during the mid-seventies... And Morocco illegally claimed the territory as theirs. They did what was called in Spain "La Marcha Verde". Sending large groups of moroccan nationals on a march into the area to "claim" and settle there.

Most of the original people of the Spanish Sahara now live in the desert in refugee camps in southwestern Algeria, where they were forced to go after that....

A very sad story...

Spanish sahara belonged to Spain during Franco´s government (dictatorship in Spain 1939-1975) but nowadays it doesn´t.

they try to be an independent country,

it is not claimed by Spain, only by Morocco that says old spanish sahara belong to them.

"Spanish Sahara" is its own country...I think it's Equatorial Guinea, now.  

Not claimed by anyone else to my knowledge, and quite poor, too, as I understand.  I met a woman from there while in Barcelona.  People emigrate from there to places where they can have a better life.

It was spanish until 1975. Nowadays, technically, is a territory occupied by Morocco, which claims full sovereignity over it. Only a few countries recognize Western Sahara as an independent state, and only a few countries recognize Western Sahara as part of Morocco. Most of the saharui population lives currently in refugee camps in Algeria, following the moroccan ocuppation of the country. There is a national government on the exile, in Algeria, established by the "Frente Polisario", the Saharian resistance organization that fought a war against Morocco following the anexation of the former Spanish Sahara.  

Spain has no territorial claims over Western Sahara.
