Spanish Women’s Water Polo Team wins vital match against England – 2011 FINA World League
The Spanish Women’s Water Polo team has won a vital match over Great Britain at the 2011 FINA World League by 16-11 in Barcelona.
The British Women’s Water Polo team started the match with a strong burst and took a lead of 4-2 at the end of the first interval in Barcelona. Afterwards, the Spanish team made a huge recovery by scoring continuous goals over the British net. Before the
start of the last quarter, the vital match between the two teams was levelled by 11-11 goals each and it really created a huge thrill in the Barcelona crowd.
The Spanish Women’s Water Polo team scored five goals on the trot over the Brits in the final quarter and hence they won the match by a comprehensive margin of 16-11 on Sunday.
After the match, Fiona McCann said, “We started strong and took an early lead in the first quarter. We started where we left off from the Hungarian game really but unfortunately we just couldn’t capitalise on all of our chances.”
She further added that it had been an encouraging performance against the top teams in the World League and they will be looking forward to have another burst at them at the next weekend in Athens.
Earlier, the British Women’s Water Polo had upset Greece by 10-9 in Barcelona in a historical performance. However, they lost the match against Hungary by 14-9 earlier this week.
Captain Fran Leighton stated, “Unfortunately a slow start in the first quarter let us down and left us with a massive job to do. We fought back hard to win the final quarter 3-1 which was a great achievement. We are now looking forward to another strong
performance against Spain tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, the British Women’s Water Polo team has returned home by their most encouraging and promising performance over three tough teams in Barcelona this week.
They will be up against these three teams in Athens from May 20 – 22, 2011 while the Super Finals will be held at Tianjin, China from June 14 – 19, 2011.
The Spanish Women’s Water Polo Team has a decent chance of winning the FINA World League 2011. At the same time, one cannot overlook the performance of Hungary in water polo at all as they too have equal chances of winning the World League Super Final.
The FINA World League is an important step for the Spanish Women’s Water Polo team for their most vital Olympic campaign ahead in London 2012.
