Question:

Spanish basketball players racist?

Did anyone see the pictures of the Spanish basketball teams (men and women) posing for pictures making their eyes look asian?

What do you think would happen if the U.S. players were caught doing this?

  1. The USA has azn players. They wouldn't do that.

Spain didn't do this out of racism but it was a poor choice and showed lack of judgement.

  2. Uh, I watched Spain vs Germany game last night. The crowds were supportive to Spainish team (with Chinese crowds, too), and the commentator from CCTV sports never said anything against them. I think they treated it as a joke, and maybe not a very funny joke for Americans because they are more racially sensitive about stuff like this.

I would consider this as a payback though hahaha. Old Chinese/Taiwanese are the most racist people in the world (well along with crackers in some US country side that I lived). d**n grew up with them just made this incident look like nothing.

By the way, David Stern will fine if US players ever did it. Stern hasn't been in very good mood lately, and his nba doesn't need another bad incident.

However, Shaq did mock Yao a couple times publicly with fake chinese accent. He never got fined. Steve Kerr accidentally called Yao a 7'6" Chinaman while he was working for TNT. All he did was apologizing. TNT didn't ban him either.

  3. it was poor judgment. it looked like something a 10 year old would do. i don't think they are racist, i just think they need to learn that people are really sensitive about racial issues.

edit: american players would never have done something this dumb. they know how sensitive people are about race.

  4. This isn't the first photo. It's actually the second one, the official team posed for a pic previously, doing the same thing. Spain isn't exactly known for being one of the most progressive and ethnically diverse countries in Europe. Take a look at the Netherlands men's soccer team! That's diversity! Spain is still pretty backward, and dare I say not even as developed as some eastern European countries. It is immature, as another posted indicated, something a child would resort to doing. Although I wouldn't say ten year old, it would be more like a five year old...

  5. Not even the Chinese took offense, so no need to make a big deal about it.

  6. good thing it wasn't U.S. basketball team...they would pay alot fines and suspensions or get kick from the Olypmics..

the media wouldn't even give them the chance to defend themselves

  7. it was just a mistake... they had no idea what the "slant eye" gesture meant.  .
