okay, so my mom's a teacher, and her whole elementary school is doing these "Olympics" and each grade has to choose a country

her grade chose Spain

so she's got activities and videos and food and stuff for her class, but she wants a dessert from Spain

so what's an easily made Spanish (not Mexican) dessert that third graders would like, that could easily be made into a large amout (or like 30)?

thanks!

  1. flan it's classic

  2. Flan.  It's a caramel custard and it's super easy to make using a store bought mix(it's usually with the pudding mixes).

  3. Dulce de Leche

    1 can sweetened condensed milk

Remove the label from the can of condensed milk. Poke two vent holes in the top, by using a can opener for example. Put the can into a pot (with the holes up), and fill up the pot with water until it is a quarter inch or so below the top of the can. Put the pot on a stove and turn up the heat. Let the pot and can simmer gently for about one and a half to two hours for runny dulce de leche, or up to four hours for solid dulce de leche. Add more water, as necessary, when the level boils down too much.

When it's done, let it cool for a while, and then carefully open up the can completely and eat directly (for the solid variety) or use as a dessert spread (for the liquid variety).

The resulting product should be colored tan or brown.

This is really good.  My daughter's Spanish teacher made it for the class one day.

  4. While all the desserts posted are YUMMY - I agree flan is probably the best option.  It's easy to make (similar to a custard/pudding) and sweet and yummy for that age group (heck, for any age group, lol).

And instead of making one big one, what you can do is make a bunch of muffin or mini muffin sized ones - basically individual servings.  I know some have made it using the cup cake wrapper in the tin, then placing the caramel "topping" in and then pouring in the flan mix.

When serving, have something to serve each one on - the idea is to "flip" the flan over so the caramel topping runs down and coats it.

Hope this helps ... FoodTV has great recipes, too.

  5. Since Mexico was fonded by the Spanish the food and culture are going to have a lot in common. Here's a recipe for churros Spanish donut.

  6. POLVORONES (MELT-IN-YOUR-MOUTH SPANISH

    COOKIES)

    1/2 lb. butter

    1 c. granulated sugar

    1/2 c. confectioners' sugar

    2 eggs

    4 c. all-purpose flour, sifted

    1 tsp. baking powder

    1/2 tsp. salt

    1 tbsp. brandy

    1/2 c. sugar

    2 tbsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter with the 2 kinds of sugar until very creamy and light. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add baking powder and salt to flour and add to cream mixture in thirds. Finally, blend in the brandy.

Roll out on floured board to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter (smallest available). Place on greased cookie sheet and bake for approximately 12 minutes, until light gold in color. Sprinkle with mixture of sugar and cinnamon while still hot. Yields: about 5 dozen.

    ALMOND COOKIES  - (ALMENDRADOS)

    Ingredients :

    1 cup Toasted almonds

    3 lrg Egg whites

    2/3 cup Sugar

    Method :

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grind almonds to a fine paste in electric blender or mortar. Mix with sugar and add egg whites beaten just enough to blend. The mixture should be thick enough to hold the shape of a cookie when dropped from a spoon.

Drop heaping teaspoonfuls onto buttered cookie tins and bake until browned (12 to 15 minutes). Cookies will be soft when removed, but will become crisp as they cool on rack.

This recipe makes about 2 dozen cookies, 2 1/2 to 3-inches in diameter.

hope these help.           good luck and enjoy.
