Spanish golfer Alvaro Quiros qualifies for the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Finishing tied for 27th at the Masters last week, Spaniard Alvaro Quiros has officially qualified to be part of the high profile playing field at the next month's Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesin near Marbella.
Alvaro finished his pitch for the green jacket with a 1-under, tied for the 27th
along with defending champion Phil Mickelson, earning €38,219. Alvaro has qualified through the European Tour money list and is the first Spaniard who has qualified to be a part of the field for the tournament played at home.
“I am so happy to have qualified,” he said. “I was very relieved to find out on Monday that I had made it as it was definitely one of my main goals this season. It is a world-class field and I am delighted that I will be part of it and hope that I will give
the home fans something to cheer about.”
Alvaro has won five tournaments on the European Tour since turning professional in 2004. He won the Dubai Desert Classic in February this year with a one-shot lead over runners-up Anders Hansen and James Kingston. He made an outstanding Hole in One at the
par-3 11th.
Alvaro is also the winner of last year’s Open De Espana when he defeated England’s James Morrison on the Playoff hole. He also ended up tied for 11th at the Open Championship in 2010.
Alongside Alvaro, the star-studded field comprises of Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, Paul Lawrie, Johan Edfors, Robert Karlsson, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, YE Yang, Ross Fisher, Soren Kjeldsen and Francesco Molinari.
Volvo Match Play Championship is returning to Finca Cortesin Spain after a year. The field size was raised from 16 to 24 players in 2009 when England’s Ross Fisher won the title earning €2,148,177. The tournament purse for this year is €3,400,000.
Volvo is the official sponsor of the tournament marking its 124th title sponsorship for the sport which is by all means, a phenomenal contribution for the development of the sport.
