Question:

Spanish grammar for "" ???

Ive read a spanish book and have noticed they kind of use - for speak marks.

So i was wondering if anyone could explain what I should use to quote in Spanish? Would they use speech marks? And how are the " - " speech kind marks used for speech when writing?? I am failing to understand when they add a " - " such as just before a full stop etc.

Hop you can help. Thanks in advanced.

  1. We'd be able to help you better if you provide an example from the book. Right now I have no idea what you are talking about...

    Here's my e-mail reply:

    Okay, now it makes sense...

Yes, they are speech marks. The person is speaking, and the text in between the dashes (-) are just a description of the actions performed during the speech:

    Approximate translation:

Welcome, welcome- he said very nerveously- and thank you for your call. It pleases us to recieve you here. I am the director with whom you had talked to, Alan Beaker-he shook Molly's and Rocky's hands- Please, follow me.

In this text, they are indeed using the dashes(-) in place of the quotation marks (").

People use both in Spanish, just like they do in English. Some people just prefer ones to the others...

    Hope I helped...
