I am doing a worksheet on how to use the impersonal "se" when the subject is not definite. However I have a weird sentence. "¿Se le quedaron los cuadernos a tu amiga?" By using the verb quedarse it makes the reflexive at the beginning se, but I can't say "Se se quedaron" So I heard you're supposed to use "uno se quedaron..." but is the impersonal "se" referring the the amiga or the cuadernos? so am i supposed to say " una/uno/unos se quedaron"???

  1. La amiga.  Sense amiga is female you would use "una".  Be aware that some words and sayings vary depending on the country though.  We have different ways of saying things, but I'm pretty sure that what I told you was right.

  2. It is referring to the "amiga"

    Se LE quedaron

    Una se quedo

    Uno se quedo

    Unos se quedaron

Because "se le quedaron los cuadernos a la amiga" and not "se quedo la amiga a los cuadernos"

  3. That "se" is not impersonal.

¿Se le quedaron los cuadernos a tu amiga?

    =

¿Los cuadernos se le quedaron a tu amiga?

As you can see, in this case the subject is very definite (the subject is "los cuadernos") . The verb is "quedarSE" so, that SE is part of the verb.

If you want an answer to that question, you have to say:

affirmative = Sí, se LE quedaron

negative = No, no se LE quedaron

That LE is the same "le" in the first sentence, and is also the Indirect Object (equivalent to "a tu amiga")

    IMPERSONAL "SE" is different:

Se trabaja mejor en equipo. (people work better in a team)

Se es más feliz cuando se tiene amigos. (people is happier when they have friends)
