Spanish star David Villa shocked at Torres not joining him at Barcelona or Chelsea
David Villa has stated that this season will be the last chance for the failing Liverpool team to retain him. The former Valencia player stated that even if the Reds convince El Nino to stay with Liverpool for the 2010/11 season, they will have to give an astounding performance which will redeem them and make it to the top 4 position so that they can play in the Champions League. Earlier, Torres stated that he wants to be part of a team that guarantees a position in the Champions League as he wanted to win prestigious titles and awards.
Villa also added fuel to the flames when he articulated his surprise by Torres not joining Chelsea as yet. He expressed that Liverpool was about to go up in flames and if Torres did not plan to jump the ship or switch to plan B, he could be in trouble.
Early in the summers, speculations were rife that the Liverpool forward will be joining another club. Throughout the season, he was injured and gave controversial statements that casted a shadow over his stay in the World Cup. After Liverpool’s dismissive performance in the English Premier League when they finished 7th and were disqualified from the Champions League, rumours were about to come to life.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City all built up interest in signing him but in the meanwhile, the World Cup in South Africa came up as the saviour. In the FIFA 2010 World Cup, Torres gave one of the most disappointing performances of his life. He got demoted from the starting line-up to the substitutes and wasn’t able to make a comeback from there. He missed attempts to score goals throughout South Africa 2010 and tore his thigh muscle in the final match.
Later, the coveted striker advocated that he was playing in the World Cup with an injury and that was the reason behind his bad performances. Nevertheless, the star striker is still sparking interest from Chelsea and Manchester City. Early bids were already as high as 50 million but the most recent ones have gone up to as much as 70 million pounds. This would actually become a record English transfer but that is if the transfer occurs.
Villa, who has scored 107 goals in 166 matches for Valencia, is yet to make his debut for Barcelona. The club mostly consists of players from the Spanish national team that won the World Cup in South Africa. Villa has expressed that as Torres himself hasn’t declared his stay at Anfield, yet there is still a chance of him making a move towards Chelsea.
Villa had a very different World Cup from Torres. It would not be wrong to call him the 11th hour Samaritan as he scored 5 crucial goals in 7 matches that lead Spain to the finals. Villa reckons that if former Fulham manager Roy Hodgson does not turn the tables around for the club, it will be impossible to keep Torres at the club. Torres has already stated that he appreciates what the Englishman has been doing for the club.
While talking to media, Torres stated, “I am actually a little surprised. It looks like Nando is staying. After I spoke with him at the World Cup I thought he would sign for Chelsea. I think it must only be that Chelsea did not meet Liverpool's valuation. Because, if they had, I am sure he would have made the move”. He added, “This is Liverpool's last chance to keep him. They have to prove they are capable of challenging on all fronts this season, otherwise he will be gone. If Liverpool fail to win anything I am sure he will be at Chelsea next summer”.
