Spanish visa extension and already in Spain?

Question

I was originally awarded a Spanish student visa to come to Spain for 6 months to study. While here I was able to acquire an internship with a company and I would now like to remain here another year studying and working. Is there anyway I can get an extension on my visa or a temporary residence card? I called the foreign relations office and they told me there wasn't a chance for a appointment till October but my visa expires in August. Help me please!!

also, i would ask the HR department of the company you're interning with if they will sponsor you for the additional year.  they may also be able to help.
