Question:

Spanish word for chat?

One site shows charlar. Another site shows the word charla.

One has to be the word and the other will be present or past tense of the word if I am right. It seemed like an easy enough word so I can't see why there would be two answers for the word 'chat'

  1. charler is the actual verb. charla is when you are doing it. Not doing "IT" but chatting.. you know what I mean :)

  2. We use "charlar" for a normal chat in a café, a bar, etc...But when we chat online, like when we use messenger, we use the word "chatear".

  3. The proper way (believe or not) to say it in spanish is:

"Chat" or "Chatear", depending on the action.

"Salas de chat" is chat rooms

"Vamos a chatear" is lets chat.

The word "chat" was just recently incorpored to the spanish language in 2005 by the "Real Academia Española de la Lengua". The RAE is the official institution in charge of taking care off the correct way to talk in spanish. In english language there is no institution like this.

Please, go to this link and put the word chat or chatear at the white box at the top of the page.
