Question:

Sparking laptop charger...?

Sparks show up at the tip of the charger where it plugs in, seems dangerous but why does it happen?

In order to get it to charger I have to wiggle it around in the computer socket so is that the issue?

(I know theres a issue with it but I really need to use my laptop so if I keep a eye on it while it charges will it be possible to still use it or should I just wait a week to buy a new charger and not take any chances?)

  1. try sitting it in water (jokes) get a new one straight away u could get electrocuted or it would short circut your house all the time

  2. idk wat the issue is but try getting a new charger

  3. You need a new adapter now. There is a broken wire in the cable do not mess with it.

  4. Buy a new one. That is extremely dangerous.

  5. There definetly is something wrong! I'm not sure exactly what the problem is but electricity isn't really something you should mess around with. I personally wouldn't take any chances. You could either hurt yourself or damage the computer. Also wiggling the cord into the computer damages the part on the inside and your cord itself. I would say get a new charger, and if that doesn't help then take it into a computer shop to see what the problem is. Hopefully nothings seriously wrong with it!

  6. Now there's 2 possibilities here.

1.)  The DC jack (the part the charger plugs into) on the laptop is damaged.

2.)  The charger (a.k.a. ac adapter) is damaged.

You can find out which one is damaged for ~12.00 USD unless of course you have a multimeter on hand.

You can look at the AC Adapter and see the polarity of the tip (+ or -).  Set your  multimeter to DC reading and test the tip.  If the voltage output is correct then your internal DC Jack on the laptop is broke which is most laptop repair places can cost you anywhere between 75 and 150 USD

  7. THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME! I figured, hey if I dont move it, it wont matter. yeah, i was wrong. once it sparks, my screen wouldgo black, it wouldnt shut off though. A friend of mine found a charger for cheap, but he had to search for a bit. dont spend 60 dollars, mine was only 20. all you really need is the box with the cord, so search for that. that is what i ordered, but they gave me the whole charger : ) weirddd, i didnt do anything to the cord it just suddenly started. is it a dell?

  8. Just buy a new one theyre not that much. one time i got shocked because of that. dont take chances

  9. I had that happen it will eventually stop working and a new one is not cheap!! It runs anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars!! If it won't take a universal one you will have to call the manufacturer and order one!

  10. There is probably something wrong with it that is causing it not to ground properly.  If it only does it when you first plug it in, I'd continue to use it for a week.  But if it does it while it's operating, I'd stop immediately.  I had to replace my laptop cord recently and got one off ebay for less than 1/2 the price I could find it elsewhere so you might check into that.
