Spartak Moscow beat Zilina
Spartak Moscow beat Zilina 3-0 in the Champions League with the Russian side’s goals coming from Brazilian striker Ferreira Ari who scored two goals and Ibson Barreto da Silva.
Spartak Moscow dominated the early proceedings but failed to find the net until 34 minutes. Ari put his team ahead at Moscow from a corner. The Brazilian’s header looped over the goalkeeper Martin Dubravka from eight metres out. A Zilina defender cleared
the ball, but the ball was correctly judged to have crossed the line by an official who was behind the goal.
The Slovakian team were outclassed by the Russians and Dubravka was in for a busy evening. Irish international Aiden McGeady set up Dmitri Kombarov and his volley was parried well by the Zilina goalkeeper.
The Slovakians had a rare chance on 50 minutes when Captain Robert Jez picked out a pass to find striker Emil Rilke who chipped his shot wide.
On 64 minutes Ari was celebrating his second goal of the game. It was a simple goal for the Brazilian who only had to tap Dmitri Kombarov’s low struck cross into an empty net.
The home side were coasting and Brazilian midfielder Alex and new signing McGeady orchestrated most of the attacks. McGeady’s trickery posed serious problems for the Zilina defence.
Zilina were restricted to long range shots for the majority of the match and failed to test the Spartak goal. Alex should have scored a goal after McGeady surged into the box and pulled the ball back for the Brazilian.
On 75 minutes Dubravka was once again called into action and this time he tipped Alex’s vicious free kick on to the post. Ari was denied his hat-trick when he blasted over McGeady’s through ball in the 85 minute.
Spartak were not to be denied their third goal and it was two substitutes who created it. Ibson combined well with Christian Maidana who fired past Dubravka in the final minute of the game.
Spartak will be confident going into their next game against Chelsea. The Russian team have proven to be difficult to beat at home and having picked up a 1-0 away win in Marseille they will expect to progress with Chelsea.
Zilina have yet to win a match in the Champions League and they will face Marseille. Both teams will need to win to have any hope of reaching the last 16.
