Question:

Spay with no antibiotics or painkillers?

Kitty just came home from a spay, but they didn't give any painkillers or antibiotics. I know that neither are absolutely necessary, but, I think I would have felt better for Kitty if she at least had painkillers. When you got your cats/dogs spayed, did they give you any type of painkillers for when they came home? Are there any that I can get over the counter for her? I know some people use baby tylenol for dogs, but, how much would I use for an eight pound cat?

  1. She shouldn't need antibiotics but pain meds definitelyetely in order. DONT give people pain meds like tylenol. Call her vet in the am and request something be ordered.

  2. tylenol or motrin can kill your cat,  Sometimes in emergencies baby aspirin is preescribed but even that can kill a cat

No painkiller is necessary but if you feel your cat is in pain you can call in ther am

  3. Antibiotics aren't needed for most spays, although at least one painkiller injection is usually given, and for adult cats, they really should be sent home with something.  It is major surgery, and they *are* in pain.  I'd call the vet tomorrow morning and insist on something - Butorphenol is one commonly given.

For reasons not understood by me, some vets don't seem to think that pain control is necessary in animals :o(

  4. Please do not give your cat any tylenol! It is for people not dogs or cats unless your vet gives the o.k. My cats have all been spayed and did not get anything for pain, and they all did fine. She will be a bit droopy for a few days from the anesthesia. and that is good because it keeps them down and resting. Once her appetite comes back, she will be fine and back to her old self. Do not worry she will be fine.

  5. dont give it anything

  6. First, do not use human medicine on cats.

It's risky enough with dogs - my understanding is uncoated, buffered aspirin only.  But nothing for cats.  They can't metabolize human painkillers and they can be highly toxic.  There are human medicines that can be ok in tiny, tiny doses but not any painkillers that I'm aware of and always talk to a vet before giving them any kind of medication.

We let our boys be neutered without extras but got a pain killer shot for our girl.  They did say it wasn't necessary but she is a bit older and has been through a lot, including at least 2 litters of kittens (ex-stray cat).

Just her be, she should be fine.  She's probably still so confused from being knocked out that she doesn't know too much about the pain. She'll be ok.  A drive back to the vet for painkillers would probably bother her more than the pain itself.  Let her calm down and take a nice long nap, by tomorrow she'll be feeling much better.

  7. They give antibiotics in the form of an injection before they leave the pet hospital..that is all that should be needed.  NEVER give your cat human medication..especially tylenol..it is deadly to cats.  Vets usually do not send pain meds home for routine spays.  Cats don't know they had major surgery so if you mask ALL their pain they are more likely to over do it and injure themselves or tear their stitches.  Better to let them feel a little out of it so they will take it easy.

  8. My vets have never provided painkillers after spaying any of my cats.  One of the reasons for this is because they don't want them to be too active straight after surgery.  Usually they're a little groggy from the anaesthetic so it's best just to keep them somewhere quiet and warm where they can sleep it off.  Just make sure that she has easy access to her food, water and litter tray till she's fully recovered.

Please don't give your cat any medications unless your vet has prescribed them.  Many that are safe for humans or other animals can have fatal consequences for cats.
