The girls are at the vet now getting spayed. They're just under 6 mos. Really hyper when they're together. Yes i can ask the vet but I'd also like your opinion. So no walking for a few weeks? Are we going to have to put something over the stitches so they can't scratch? Oh they also getting 3rd parvo/distemper today. (The new vet requires 3 sets.)

  1. I doubt they will even try to bother with their stiches, and they should be able to walk fine.

Penny, my little mutt, was spayed at just 6 months old. She also got all her updated shots at the same time. The stitches were disolving, so I didnt have to worry about taking her back to get them removed. She came home the same day as the surgery and was a little tired. By the next day though she was back to her old self. You just have to watch them for about 10 days or so, don't let them get too rough playing where it can split the stitches.

  2. in a female you usually don't see a difference after being spayed but it shouldn't take long for a puppy to recover.

  3. I just had my dog spayed. She was a little quiet for 24 hours and the vet did send me home with liquid pain meds and a cone collar to keep her from l*****g. He also advised "no jumping/running/roughhousing for a week" I never had to use the collar and we were out walking day 3. It will probably be dog specific.

    Hope this helps

  4. Your girls are young so they will be up and about like normal after a day or two.  The vet will probably put an E-Collar on them so they can't get at the stitches and chew or scratch at them.  They can walk all they want, but you vet will probably tell you that they should limit their running, jumping, playing, etc. for about 10 days-2 weeks.  I would try to keep the two seperated for a while so they don't play rough together, at least for the first week.

  5. They will, or should, bounce back pretty quickly at this age.  And also at this age, the surgery, although abdo surgery is major surgery, is comparatively simple.  It's the effects of the anaesthetic that may take time to wear off although they probably won't release them until they are fully back in the world!   Hopefully your vet will give you instructions about feeding etc. immediately after they come home, but keep it light, fish, chicken, scrambled egg.  Don't overload their tummies, if they even want to eat tonight, that is.  I think you might be as well to separate them, especially tonight unless you intend to have them with you.  E.collars on mine have never been a success, too low to the ground (yes! Bassets!!) and they frighten them.

I think I'd keep them off any serious exercise at least for 10 days, when the stitches will come out (unless soluable).  Don't cover the wound, it needs to breath.  But do keep an eye out for infection, (inflammation, undue seeping, although occasionally some of mine have leaked (but this was spaying the older b*tch).  Injections today as well? - blimey your vet is loading them up with loads of stuff isn't he!  Guess he knows what he's doing though.

    Hope it all goes well.

  6. Well, you can expect a ten to thirteen day recovery. Don't let them jump, run, or play for a very long time. Make sure you're taking them/letting them outside frequently. Spay surgeries, in accompaniment with the anesthetic that they use, make dogs need to urinate more frequently. Crate them when you cant watch them, this ensures that they aren't roughhousing.

About the stitches/glue, you can purchase an E-Collar from your vet or from any pet store. Don't get the stitches/glue wet, and if they give you antiseptic make sure you use it. Check the incision daily to make sure its not infected, bleeding, etc.

Your vet *should* give you a care sheet for this when you go to pick them up. Any spay I've had done always came with a care sheet, no matter what vet I went to.

Thank you for NOT contributing to the pet overpopulation problem and being a responsible owner! :)
