Question:

Spaying an older dog?

I'm adopting a 2 year old Female American Eskimo that has not yet been spayed from the pound.

Is she prone to any type of cancer or illness since she is getting spayed at 2 years old rather than a puppy?

I had an american eskimo as a child that died of breast cancer because she never got spayed, so I'm just scared the samething could happen again.

Thanks for your help!!

  1. It's NEVER a bad thing to spay an older dog!  Two years old is NOT considered old to spay a dog. Your dog would actually be more prone to illness and cancer if she isn't spayed. She'll be fine. : )

  2. yes get her spayed.

    spook sends you both licks.

  3. every heat cycle increases their risk

second only to accidents, cancer is a leading cause of death in pets

  4. Nope, she'll be fine.

2 years old is not considered "old dog".

Why isn't the shelter spaying her? Most good shelters will do it before they even consider adopting out.

  5. Any dog that is older than 6 months and hasn't been spayed is prone to any illness. However, the sooner the better. I spayed my 3 yr old staffordshire bull terrier a few months ago and she recovered successfully. As long as you take her for her annual shots and check ups, she should be fine.
