  1. If you think of the earth and the satelittes that orbit it, the system is a lot like that. You have you main speakers up front, and then depending on make, etc. you have speakers set up around the room to boost the audio output. Mine has LF, LR, Center, SR, SL, BR, BL, and sub, for a total of 8 speakers.  These speakers "orbit" , if you will, the main set of speakers to create a surround sound effect. Hence, they are like satellites off the earth.

It could also be said if you think of a business, that has it's main office in the city, and a smaller "satellite" office in country. It is not as big, but does some business there. Main office- main speakers (most of the workload). satellite office- satellite speakers (each one does a little to increase).

  2. Hey o2btom, I like your analogy.

Satellites placed 22,000 miles above the Earth travel at exactly the same speed as the Earth spins, so they don't seem to move. They are in "geosynchronous" orbit.

Think of the top of your head as the North Pole while sitting in your favorite TV chair. Draw a clock on the top of your head with 12 o'clock pointing at your TV. Place speakers at 12 o'clock, 1 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock and 11 o'clock.

Your head is the Earth and your speakers are satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
