Can you take a normal speaker wire (one side black, one side red) and put on some kind of connector to make it able to hook in and act as an a/v cable?

For example, so i can take a speaker wire, and transform it into a wire i can hook into the audio slots on the back of my tv?

any input is appreciated. thanks.

  1. No, you can't.  You need an amplifier to power speakers anyway, and the rca plugs you're talking about, aren't amplified.

  2. "i can take a speaker wire, and transform it into a wire i can hook into the audio slots on the back of my tv?"

    No.

RCA output jacks contain what are called "line level" signals. There is information, but no power.

Speakers - need watts of power added to make speaker-level signals.

You need a Receiver that converts the line-level signals to speaker level signals. (Thats what a amp/receiver does).

  3. Yes you can.  You can buy RCA plugs and wire them up to your speaker wire.  However you probably won't like the results.  A/V cable is constructed very differently from speaker wire.  A/V cable uses one inner conductor and an outer conductor.  The outer conductor is also used to shield the inner conductor from electrical noise.

Also, if you are thinking you can hook up your speakers directly to the RCA plugs on your TV, you can't do that.  The RCA outputs from your tv  need to be hooked up to an amplifier for it to work properly.

  4. It's difficult to make your own.

I'd recommend going to radio shack.

What exactly do you plan on doing with this setup?

  5. Grumpy Mac is exactly right.  Those outputs will not power a pair of speakers.
