Question:

Speaker choices for a Jeep?

My 02 Grand Cherokee is currently all stock with an Infinity amp. I want to upgrade the front door speakers and maybe the dash speakers. I'd like to try keeping the stock radio and repace the amp with an Alpine mrp-f240 4 channel 40 rms amp.

Question:

The front door openings fit a 6 x 9 speaker. Should I go with a full range aftermarket 6 x 9 or a 6 1/2" component set? I am looking for a full, clear sound with detail at moderate volume. I'm not about being able to vibrate the windows. I listen to mostly accoustical jazz and classical music (some rock). which would be a better choice. Also, is it ok to parallel wire the front channels with the dash tweeters without any impedence problems?

Also, any speaker recommendations based on my amp choice would be great!

I was thinking Pioneer or mb quart discus for the 6 x 9. Bostons for compenents.

I want to try to avoid getting a sub, but if the addition would be dramatic I might try it. thanks

  1. Good questions.  :)  Something regarding sound quality.

Here's what you'll want to do.  Sound deaden the doors.  put a couple layers of b-quiet or what ever you like inside the door on the outer skins, fill the access holds on the outer skins then deaden that entire skin and add a layer of ensolite or something.  I'd definitely go with a component set over a 6x9.  Oval speakers are sonicly inferior.  Definitely get an amp, but you may want to go with some more power.  Good sound requires power too.  Not just to be loud, but to sound good.  The deadening will also help quiet your car.  If you add enough deadening to decrease your internal noise by 3db, that's the same as doubling the power to your sound system.  Nice, eh?  ;-)  Spend some time aiming your tweeters.  Try different locations even.  up on the dash, a-pillar, kick panel pointed in different areas, etc.  Unless you just want everything to stay hidden, then stick them in the door with the mid.  What ever you must do.  I'm not entirely clear on your question about paralleling the front channels.  If you plan to stick with the 40 watt per channel amp, you can shop for more efficient speakers.  Since you listen to accoustical jazz and classical music, I'd suggest shopping for speakers with natural materials.  paper cones, silk dome tweeters, etc.  They'll give you a more natural, smooth sound that in my opinion, sounds much better with that type of music.  I think I just got your parallel question.  You have stock dash tweeters you're wanting to keep in conjunction with your new tweeters, right?  I'd replace the stock ones with your new ones.  They might not have an optimum mounting location, but it will keep your system looking clean and factory.  Which brings up another issue, keeping the stock radio.  Depending on how nice of a system you're shooting for, I'd look into clean sweep and 360 solutions to adapt your stock radio to aftermarket amplifiers.  Is there a particular reason you're wanting to keep the factory head in that Jeep?  You may be further ahead to swap it out.  Anyway, your choice, it will cost about the same either route.  Keeping the stock look can be pretty important depending on where you live, etc.  I hope this has helped you out some.

Please prop me up some if it did.  And feel free to e-mail me if you've got more questions.  Once I get my message forum back up and running, I'll start pumping out the address to that.  peace and happy listening.
