The presiding officers of Lok Sabha or a State legislatures are called Speakers. But as we know they rarely speak. It is the others who speak ( and create a h**l of noise). The poor speaker has to silently bear it. Then why is he designated as Speaker?

  1. u put a good point.

he should be called silencer or peace keeper

  2. Because when he speaks, his words are pearls of wisdom insofar as the Parliamentary procedures and,the Constitution and its interpretation are concernedThe knowledge of

the members in these matters are at best superficial. Moreover,he acts as a referee in the game of governance between the treasury benches and the opposition. And the umpire

speaks only when infringements take place. His word then is law. There is no further appeal. He can show the yellow or red card or even show

the player the door.So you see, the speaker's word is final. When he speaks, everyone listens.

He alone is authorised to terminate the proceedings of the House. And that is why he is

designated as the Speaker. And that is not all.He is the Head Honcho of the House to whom every member is answerable, even the

    PM.

  3. The title goes back to the origins of the English House of Commons.  I guess it might refer to the Speaker's former duties of conveying information between the House of Commons and the Throne.
