Speaker hook ups

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I CAN SPLICE SPEAKER WIRES FROM THE BACK OF MY RECIEVER INTO SPEAKER WIRES COMEING OUT FROM A AMP? THAT WAY I WOULD'NT ALWAYS HAVE TO TURN THE AMP ON TO GET SOUND.
