  1. The gift was confined to the early days of the apostolic age. It was not classed as high as some other gifts especilly that of prophecy. The word tongue has a general use in the  Bible, for language [ Genesis 10:31], for people [ Isaiah 66;18], and for speech generallly [Provebs 15:4]. James says the tongue is often unruly and needs to be controlled [ James 1:26; 3:1-13].

  2. Speaking in tongues in the BIble was reffering to the Israelites speaking in different languages. Not speaking jibberish like a crazed possessed demon.

  3. What people call "speaking in tongues" today is just gibberish.

And yes, I can do it and I am a Christian.

If you check the bible, you'll notice that authentic speaking in tongues is UNDERSTOOD by all who listen - an occurence that hasn't happened for a couple thousand years.

  4. You just have to be a good actor.  Flop on the floor like a fish and babble like a baby.  Presto, you are speaking in tongues.

Do you really think God wanted people to talk in gibberish?  If so, why didn't he make us all one language---gibberish.  Does God speak gibberish?  If not then what is the point?

  5. The Bible defines "unknown tongues" as known dialects of places in which the speaker had never lived or learned, not a "God language".  Never was that part of any understanding until the 1800s.  The Bible is where you need to find the truth and not from man.

There are no speaking in tongues today as they were only for that time to spread the gospel to areas where they did not know the language.

  6. "Officer." is incorrect in that it was not used by the Israelite, the first mention of speaking in tongues is on the day of Pentecost, when the disciples of Jesus descended from the Upper Room and began to preach.  According to the story, there were men from different nations standing around and each man heard it in his own tongue.

The Pentecostals have it wrong, it's not angelic tongue or anything like that.

  7. You need to read the bible regarding this matter and also understand tongues is nothing more than a languange.  Some people get hit with the spirit and speak it in plain english.  Also realise some people are faking.

I have been hit with the spirit and have said nothing at all.  Just been overwelmed with the spirit.  You just start feeling this euphoria.  It may make you sway back and forth, may make you shout, or whatever.  But I believe some people fake it, doing what they see others do but its not something you can ask for.  It dont happen that way.

I felt it one day when i was meditating in prayer at home by myself and I got so deep into it it felt like I was floating, and just kept changing my prayer and crying.  Really hard to explain.  It has been years since I have felt the spirit.  When my father passed a part of me closed up and havent been back since.

  8. It is my understanding that it is Holy Spirit that will pray out on your behalf through your sounds that will be heard by the Lord. I prefer to just pray directly to God and forgo the odd feeling I get about the whole thing. It is not for everyone.

  9. It usually just happens if you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  The baptism is more than being filled with the Spirit.  It is being totally immersed in the Spirit.  So, did you receive the Baptism? (Luke 3:16, Acts 1:5, 8) and if so but you didn't get the gift of tongues, then you may receive it later.  Just pray for it.  I had to wait 3 years and 8 months after receiving the baptism before I spoke in tongues and then got 3 languages (diverse tongues).  Praise God.  It is such a precious gift and we see how necessary it is after we get it.  Another thing to note is that IF you didn't get the gift of tongues at the time you received the baptism, then you DID receive another important gift (or more) which can be worked on and expanded.

  10. speaking in tongues is an interesting phenomenon. It's instinctual. Every human can do it, it's just that not many figure out how to tap into that portion of themselves.

I don't think closeness to God has anything to do with it (unless God forces it on you), as demons do it all the time. That "gibberish" they seem so prone to spout during possessions? Yeah. That's tongues...

  11. I read an interesting study by two linguists. They recorded a fairly large number of people speaking in tongues, who had several different native languages.

They then analyzed the phonemes in each "tongues" recording. (Phonemes are the individual sounds that make up speech in any particular language and are specific to that language.) Turns out that when speaking in tongues, presumably mysterious and unknown to them, each individual used only phonemes characteristic of his or her own native language, whatever that happened to be.

You can draw your own conclusions from that.

  12. I studied Spanish and constantly hung out with Spanish speaking people.  I ask God for important things, like food, shelter, the well-being of my loved ones and my enemies, etc.  Tongues are something I can study on my own.

AZ NIGHT WOLF hit it right on.

  13. Wow.  In reading the responses to your question, I see that most people feel negatively about speaking in tongues.  First, I just want to clarify that I am considered by many to be a fairly normal person.  (As much as anyone can be, right?)  I do believe in speaking in tongues, but unlike some others, I think it is necessary for salvation, and not just a gift.  But your question wasn't about soteriology.  So I will just tell you about my experiences speaking in tongues.

When I am speaking in tongues, my mind is completely on God.  Whether it is praising or just praying, I am concentrating on Him.  I am not in a "trance" or "possessed" as other people have suggested.  It is not something you can "try" to do.  I truly believe that if you change your prayer from "Help me speak in tongues" to start praying to be shown the truth in the scriptures, and to draw closer to Him, then you will find what you are searching for.

I do think it is funny what everyone thinks  is normal and acceptable is not the same.  Just because I believe in speaking in tongues, doesn't mean I am crazy, possessed, in a cult, etc.  I am not a Bible basher.  I know what I believe, and don't try to shove it down anyone's throat.  I don't jump on the beliefs of Catholics, Jehovah Witness, Jews, or Scientologists, and tell them how stupid or insane they are.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all act civilized sometimes?

    Best of luck to you!

  14. Speaking in tongues is simply gibberish nothing more.

  15. There are many gifts. Some people are granted the gift of speaking in tongues- the ability to learn, understand, and use languages. Some others have other gifts. I am kind and a good mother. I feel my gift is to be nurturing. My brother is a great businessman. He has the gift of being able to understand people.

I commend your ability to seek what you want and the ability to ask God for it... now comes the hard part. You asked to be able to speak languages go and learn them! Go to night school, pick up a teach yourself Italian book. The ability to learn may be your gift. Then again, no one has all the gifts. maybe you aren't meant to have the gift of tongues. Maybe you have other gifts.

I do think that Gods works are contingent on faithfulness and you show faith by praying and asking for his help.

God does many miracles daily, however, I think your request will require some work on your part as well.

  16. Biblically, speaking in tongues doesn't lie with the speaker, it lies with the hearer.  You may speak in English, but the person listening hears it in their own language.  What most churches practice today is mere gibberish.
