Spear fishing? Open water fishing?

What is it call when you fish with a pole , that has a rubberband around your rist. The pole has three spikes on the other end. You pull it back and let it go.

Spear Fishing is the sport. The pole with the rubberband is called a pole spear or a Bahamian sling. Many people confuse it with the Hawaiian sling but it is not.

A Hawaiian sling works sort of like a sling shot. It has a holster which you put your spear through, pull back, and shoot. The pole and the holster are not connected. So if you shoot a fish in a non vital spot it can actually swim away with your spear!

A pole spear on the other hand is a pole connected to a band at the end. They come in 2 sizes 6 ft and 9 feet.

The pole you describe is called a Hawaiian Sling.  Spearfishing is the act of using it while diving to snag fish.
