Spear fishing with a pole spear?

Question

I am thinking about buying a pole spear beacause they seam like the cheapest way to spear fish. how go they work. and after you spear the fish couldn't it swim a way with it. what if you miss?

They are on a teather. like a bungee with a wrist strap connected near the bottom end. . To use it you stretch it out and hold  closer to th tip, then realease it to let it shoot forward.
