Special Feature: Quotes of the week – Part 2
Sir Alex Ferguson’s inclusion is a must in every quotes of the week feature as most of his comments are usually priceless. The longstanding Manchester United manager commented on the FIFA World Cup, its attractiveness or apparently the
lack of it. Ferguson said, "The important thing is the Champions League has proved itself since its inception. It is better than the World Cup. It is unbelievable. Have you seen the last six World Cups? It is better going to the dentist".
Roy Hodgson didn’t actually respond to Rafael Benitez’s jibes from across the English Channel but he did remark on the media pressure and the transfer rumours that have surrounded his best players. The former Fulham man said, "It is an
interesting thing for me to get into the type of mindset Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are so good at. Every other day they've probably read or heard some nonsense about them and they seem to be a pretty hardened bunch. I'm relatively hardened but I've
been spared too much at Fulham, where never a bad word was said".
Ian Holloway was in reminiscent mood as he spoke about Blackpool’s endeavours in the 2010 summer transfer window. Blackpool’s manager said, "It was the worst time I've ever known and I don't want to ever face that again. The realization
of what other people are paying was a huge shock to us. The realization of what people will want to come to Blackpool knowing that 'oh they're going to be the laughing stock, they're going to be the whipping boys, and they won't even get 10 points for the
whole season'. Other people were thinking that so the amount of money they might have wanted was exaggerated. I just thought the chairman's head was going to come right off"
Nani has been recently compared to his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of his ability on the field. But the Portuguese winger was content with that as he showcased that he can be as arrogant as his close friend by saying, "As a player
I think I'm close to being as complete as I can be. Now I can say I'm one of the top players in the world".
Lee Cattermole on the other hand had his hands full as Sunderland were beaten by a four goal margin by their derby rivals, Newcastle United. Lee commented after the game on his continuous display of patience which allowed him to spend
90 minutes of the field for the Black Cats. The under-21 England international said, "I tried to stay focused. I could easily have gone out on the p**s. A couple of years ago, I probably would".
Alternatively, Arsene Wenger was appreciative of Wojciech Szczesny as he commented on the young goalie’s future at the club. The Frenchman said, "He wants to stay I want him to stay, so basically plus, plus plus should be plus”, some interesting
mathematics there by the professor.
Recently, Diego Maradona also made the headlines and this time it was not due to his removal from the Argentinean international team setup. This time it was for his observations on the death of the one and only ‘Paul the Octopus’. The
infamous sea creature passed away last week and Diego remarked on the sorrowful demise of the pundit animal as he said, "I am happy you're gone, psychic octopus, it's your fault we lost the World Cup".
When he was asked about his future ambitions as a coach, Maradona said, "Of course I would be interested [in working in England]. I was looking at Arsenal and Chelsea, and talking to Kevin Keegan. Everything is so perfect there. The players
are surrounded by everything they need. It's phenomenal”. Keegan and Maradona now that is a striking partnership that even Sir Alex will drool at.
