Special Olympics Canada Winter Games to commence in St. Albert from Tuesday
The opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games is scheduled to take place on February 28 with the city of St. Albert playing host to the prestigious sporting event.
The athletes having intellectual disabilities will be arriving in St. Albert from all parts of the country to take part in the event.
The venue of the opening ceremony is planned to be the Servus Place. The ceremony is set to start at 7 p.m. according to the local time. It is expected that the total number of athletes as well as the volunteers will equal to be 2000.
Dan MacLennan, the event chairman, shared his views on the Special Olympics by making the following comments, “It's just an amazing level of athleticism and dedication. If anyone is down on sports, that whole perspective will change after watching a couple
of floor hockey games. I've never seen anyone getting a bronze who wasn't having a good time. Everything that sports should be, the Special Olympics is.”
The Special Olympics taking place in St. Albert is not charging any of the spectators that will come to its venues in order to support the athletes with intellectual disabilities. After the opening ceremony is held, the Special Olympics events will get underway
from Wednesday onwards. On the other hand, the closing ceremony will be stages on Saturday.
There are a variety of events in which the athletes with intellectual disabilities will take part. These will be held in different venues in St. Albert. The events that will take place at the Severus place include speed skating, floor hockey as well as figure
skating.
On the other hand, the St. Albert Curling Centre and the St. Albert Rugby Club will be featuring curling and snowshoeing respectively.
Out of all the athletes that will come to exhibit their skills, Team Alberta includes a total of 78. These athletes range from a varying age group that is in between 14 to 65 years. Many of the athletes from Team Alberta are those that are aspiring to be
a part of the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games that will be held in PyeongChang.
