I asked an ealier question about CCT's and tacp officer. I consider myself relativly weak in the water. Should I consider another position. Any ideas? I really want to be in the action missions of the Air Force- my Dad was in OSI. What would be a good position?

  1. What do you mean by "weak" in the water? If it is inexperience, that can be overcame. If it is fear, unless you can adapt and learn to trust yourself and the skills you'll be taught, that would be a disqualifer.

If you can't pass the PAST, I wouldn't attempt to try for STO selection. If you can work at your swimming, become comfortable in the water and improve your fitness in the water, then I would say go for it. Do you have someone you can work out with or are you near a base that has PJ/CCT guys? We'll usually help those with an interest in the careerfield improve their weaknesses if you stop by and make contact.

"Action" missions can vary in the Air Force. If you want to be on the ground, your choices are CCT/STO, PJ/CRO, TACP (there are no TACP officers) and sometimes SOWT (combat weather.)  There isn't much else.

Honestly, and I am a bit bias because I am in the ST community, I would recommend improving your swimming and going for what it is you think you want the most. It may take you a little longer to get there, but in the long run, at least you won't regret it or take a job you didn't necessarily want.
