  1. okay, I heard this idea on the radio, you could try it.  The man said, if you really need/want a job and no-one will hire you, then go to the place you really would like to work and volunteer. Tell them you will just come every day and work all day for free just to learn the trade. (if you're just home anyway, you're not really losing anything, you know?)  Then work hard at that job, like it's the thing you always wanted, and the guy said..what employer, after seeing you work hard there for a few months is not going to hire you as soon as he gets a job opening you are eligible for!

(you might doublecheck on this though that the manager isn't legally required to get someone with a certain education) but a local small business where the owner can decide...this might work for you!

  2. are you the in the USA-what state?  if you have an IEP and meet the requirements of teh IEP you are supposed to get a standard diploma in some states-not just a certificate of completion-

that used to happen regulary a few generations ago-unfortuately it is still being practiced in many areas..

if you are able can you get a GED-colleges wil recognize that

also work with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation

    this is the GA website

    http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/ci_testing.aspx...

According to Rule 160-1-3-.09, Waivers and Variances of High School Graduation Assessments Guidelines, students may receive a Georgia regular education diploma through the assessment waiver or variance process if they meet specific criteria. Descriptions of waivers and variances appear below. For detailed information,...

there is info about waivers and variances(for what I don't know)-it looks like you can return to take the standardized test to get a standard diploma-

I can't make sense of the website and I don't have a LD-

  3. You can attend job training programs at the community college or other trade school.  Military is also an option. Many jobs also provide on the job training.   Have you talked to a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor.  If not, give them a call.  Sorry they didn't explain this to you earlier.

EM- This is not a disability issue.  It's a matter if he is qualified for a job or not.

Edit- You need to take hold of your life.  You are 29 years old and obviously not mentally retarded.  You need to go to the community college and sign up for a program that interests you.  What would you want to do?  Move on with your life.  Find a trade based program and move on from there. There are many trade jobs like welding and auto mechanics that do not require a diploma to enter in.  Look for certificate programs instead of diploma ones.    If you really wanted to, test for the GED while you are at it.

  4. If you have a local community college start there. You usually have to take some type of entrance exam, but that will give you a starting level. Then you will probably have to take remedial classes in reading, writing, and math.

Community colleges usually offer some type of certificate program to prepare you for employment.

Some community colleges or Goodwill training centers offer job skills training. Also go to your Vocational Rehabilitation office they will help get you set up with a service that can help.

  5. All education is worth it. You need some specialist advice now. Do you have a councellor you can speak to. Or go to the local job centre they may have a specially trained advisor.

  6. I know how you feel,spinning your wheels.Obviosly

your sped diploma is a certificate of completion and is not acceptable at even community colleges.

I was in sped and when I found out I would not get

a diploma I just threw up my hands. Did they tell

you before hand about this? Yes this is what happens to most sped kids, they are just passed on without learning how to read and do math and

when it comes time to graduate they are given a

certificate and told good luck and then face a world of uncertainy,Thats what happened to me.

Go to your local BVR office and talk to them.

  7. You found out you can't use your alternate diploma to get into school?  Even trade schools?  This isn't right!  Actually, it's against the law.  According to ADA, they can't discriminate against you because you have a disability.  Do some research and let the schools or companies your interested in know that you're aware of your rights.  Don't give up!  It wasn't a waste of time, trust me!

  9. If you like school may u want to keep studying other short career like CNA just for mentioned something, but u know what other professionals assist the handicapped, then at the same time u can start writing a book for specials kids relatives or assist mom in privete practice, to care and deal with the kids

  10. You were legally supposed to be involved in your own IEP, planning your transition during high school and into post-high school.

Your transition plan is required under federal law.

IDEA is that federal law requiring all students with disabilities be given an education comparable to students without disabilities. And this law also includes a regular diploma. Why did you not say anything throughout the program?

What were you going to do after high school (job, what kind of job) and how would those post-high school goals be accomplished?

Would you go to college or complete a training program for a non-college degree job. What would you need for accomplishing each goal?

Where was the involvement in you planning for your own future? Where was your transition plan?

I too was in special education during public school. And I will admit that some administrators have low expectations of us and our capabilities.

But it is our own futures--so I disagree that attending public school was a waste of time.

How we choose to prepare--or not prepare--for OUR own futures after high school is only what determines if high school is a waste.

  11. My child was in special education throughout their entire public school (K-12) career AND received a REGULAR high school diploma when my child graduated from high school.

I am extremely surprised that you was given a "Special Education Diploma"!

Go to this website if you are experiencing discrimination.

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

    www.ada.gov

  12. I was in special ed in high school and I got a normal diploma and went to a regular college.  Maybe talk to your high school.

  13. If you are able to you could try to get a regular diploma at an online school.  Just explain to the state department that you want to try for a regular diploma.  Also, you are entitled to be educated until you are 21, so there is nothing stopping you from going back to school if you don't have a regular diploma.
