There are even children / teenagers / adults with Autism who need restraint from staff whenever they throw horrific outbursts and fits in the classroom, in a manner in which they refuse to follow instructions or do anything.

Are there any other related disabilities / disorders in which the special needs who refuse to cooperate and go ballistic in which staff members have to calm them down by restraining them and give them encouragement to follow directions?

Bipolar? Schizophrenia? ADHD? Any other related disabilities / disorders? Post a response and tell me what you know. But be specific, and don't give me any simple answers.

  1. I agree with the first responder about properly trained professionals doing the restraint, and that it is used rarely and only in certain circumstances.  However, I think your question was asking what disorders could prompt that response.   I suppose any emotional disturbance and many forms of mental illnesses could cause these behaviors.  In our school, restraint is sometimes used with our Emotional Disturbed students.  ODD students can easily escalate to that level ( Oppositional Defiant disorder).  Also, consider that sometimes kids have had a bad reaction to a medication or drug which can cause them to be paranoid, oppositional or overly aggressive. For example, antihistamines and anti seizure medications  can cause behavior problems. On rare occasions, a tumor in the wrong part of the brain, chemical imbalance, lead poisoning, pesticides, brain infections, or brain traumas  can also affect behavior.

Finally, yes, sometimes ADD or ADHD students may have some aggression issues, in part because impulsiveness is part of their symptoms, so they act without thinking it through.

    Hope this answers your question.

  2. Physical restraint is always and ONLY used as a last resort, when the individual is in danger of hurting himself or others. Additionally, it is only used by trained professionals. If attempted by untrained persons, or used incorrectly, it can result in injury (or even death).
