Question:

Special education teacher requirements

Hey,

I just graduated this past May with a BA in Elementary Education and I have that certification (K-5). I would now like to do special education. What are the requirements for that certification/endorsement? I inquired with the college I went to and they said that I need a Master's in that field, but I think they just want me to go back for my tuition money.

Is it true that all it takes is a few undergraduate courses?

Thanks!

  1. Just look around this corner or section to find my other answers on Education being questioned. Look now, they last only for 3 days.

Sorry I do not want to repeat what I said.  Thank you for your searching effort.

  2. It depends on your state. I have my BS in Special Education which required me to also pass my state's Area Exam in Special Education. I aslo took area exams in middle school and k-6. Now I can teach all subject areas in the basic classroom k-8 as well as ESE k-12.  If you already have a degree in education, you should not have to get your masters to teach ESE.  Don't ask the college because you are right, they are money hungry.  Call your State's Department of Educaion and speak to a certificatioin specialist because these are the one's who truly know.....they are the only ones who can approve and issue you a teaching license.

    Good Luck
