Special force to be delegated to stop betting syndicates during the games – London Olympics 2012
It has recently been revealed that the London Olympic Games 2012 heads are chalking up the groundwork for providing the event with a specialist force that will have the sole responsibility of dealing with the illegal gambling syndicates.
The special task force will be given the responsibility of spying out the groups that tempt athletes into bribing during the Olympic Games.
The special task force will consist of various groups that will include the Interpol, Serious Organised Crime Agency as well as the Metropolitan Police. The task force will be specifically assigned duties that would centre around making sure that no athlete
is approached by anyone associated with the illegal betting syndicates during the entire time period of the Games.
The UK Minister for Sports, Hugh Robertson, expressed himself on the issue in the following manner and said, “All the evidence is that it's likely to happen. That comes from illegal gambling syndicates in the Far East and on the Indian subcontinent, that
comes from the evidence of what we have already seen happening in this country with the incident at Lord's 18 months ago. And it comes with the realization that there are many sports in the Olympic mix, hockey is just one, but any of those team sports could
be targeted in the same way. There are the conditions there in the Olympics for this to thrive.”
According to Robertson, the betting syndicates which are of a foreign origin are a bigger threat to the Olympic Games than the ones that are local.
The Olympic Games are coming back to the city of London after more than half a century. It would be the third time that the Olympic Games would be staged in the capital of England.
After the Olympic Games are over, London will become the first ever city in the world to have had the honour of hosting the Olympic Games for the third time in its history. The first time that the Games came to the city of London was in 1908. The second
time was four decades later in the year 1948.
