Question:

Special made Prosthetic Eyes {serious questions please}?

Hi I have a prosthetic eye and am wondering if there are any places out there that do custom made ones, like a bulls eye or a smiley face or something of that nature. I have a sense of humor unlike most and don't plan on getting depressed over this, so if anyone knows some websites or artists that do that kind of thing it would be much appreciated

  1. Assuming your prosthesis is one of the various removable varieties, there no technical (only financial) reasons why you could not have the same form duplicated in whatever  design you like.

(how about a glowing red one with a tiny rechargeable battery built in?)

It's never come up before, but I'm trying to think if there would be any desperate problem with wearing one of the plano "crazy" soft contacts over the prosthesis.

If it centred well and was stable, I don't think there would be: normal handling and hygiene rules applying.

But I'd take that to your specialist to get clearance, and care advice if they are happy to let you try that.

edit: go ask!  We often get stuck doing the routine, and forget that might not be what's wanted.  For me, occasionally, I had to remember some people spend all their days doing computer/closework,  and that reading-focussed contacts, with distance glasses over the top to drive home in might be a better way round.

In your case, the default professional reflex will always have been to make the prosthesis as much like the other eye as possible.  The possibility of making it deliberately odd just may not have occurred.

  2. Ask the ocularist (the person who made your prosthetic eye.)  Most prosthetic eyes are custom made, and the ocularist may be able to make this for you, or know who can.
